To be admitted to a program* at the Academy of Design, all prospective students must have an Ontario secondary school diploma (grade 12) or its equivalent.
Prospective students who are over 18 and not enrolling directly from secondary school may apply to take a mature student test for admission to the school.
In addition, special admission requirements apply to each program and are outlined below.
* Applicants in the Video Game Design & Development program are exempt from the general admission requirements for the Academy of Design. However, this program does have its own admission requirements – outlined below.
As part of the application process to be admitted to the Academy of Design’s Bachelor of Interior Design program, all prospective students must meet the following requirements.
ACADEMIC PATHWAY
REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
High School Students entering from high school are required to have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) with at least a 65% average in six courses from the U/M level or equivalent including: Grade 12 English, Grade 12 Science, and Grade 12 Math.
College/University Graduates from another university or college will be assessed on a case-by-case basis:

Academy of Design Graduates Graduates of the Interior Decorating diploma program at the Academy of Design:
Mature Students Mature Students with a high school diploma may be considered for admission if they are 21+ years of age (for online delivery), or 19+ years of age (for in-class delivery). They must also have successfully completed a minimum of 24 credit hours at the post-secondary level.
Mature Students without a high school diploma can not directly apply to the Bachelor of Interior Design degree program, but may be considered for the diploma program and enter the Bachelors degree after completing three terms with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Statement of Interest and Commitment:
In no more than 300 words, please write a short essay telling us about yourself and your interest in interior design. Also include a statement of commitment telling us why you wish to start now and why you will see your education through to the end. This will help us to determine your suitability to our program.
Portfolio/Samples of work:
This work does not need to be interior design related if you have no previous course work or industry-related experience, but must be original submissions (up to five pieces) that show us your potential in the field.
Applicants are required to submit the following:
Statement of Interest: In a short essay (300 – 500 words), prospective students should explain why they are interested in a career in the graphic design industry. In reviewing essays, the Admissions Committee will be looking for expressions of passion and excitement about graphic design and how applicants have expressed their interest through activities such as hobbies, part-time jobs and other educational programs.
In the essay, applicants may also identify a particular aspect of the graphic design industry that interests them and/or state specific career goals and reasons for their goals. Applicants should present their statement of interest in a professional manner, paying attention to spelling, grammar and format. Note: Essays will not be returned.
Statement of Interest: In a short essay (300 – 500 words), prospective students should explain why they are interested in a career in the fashion industry. In reviewing essays, the Admissions Committee will be looking for expressions of passion and excitement about graphic design and how applicants have expressed their interest through activities such as hobbies, part-time jobs and other educational programs.
In the essay, applicants may also identify a particular aspect of the fashion industry that interests them and/or state specific career goals and reasons for their goals. Applicants should present their statement of interest in a professional manner, paying attention to spelling, grammar and format. Note: Essays will not be returned.
Statement of Interest: In a short essay (300 – 500 words), prospective students should explain who their favourite designer is and why. In reviewing essays, the Admissions Committee will be looking for general expressions of understanding about fashion design and insights about the designer an applicant is writing about specifically.
In the essay, applicants should discuss the different elements of their favourite designer’s work and reference magazines and online materials to add substance and authority to their writing. Applicants should present their statement of interest in a professional manner, paying attention to spelling, grammar and format. Note: Essays will not be returned.
Statement of Commitment: In a short essay (300 – 500 words), prospective students should outline their personal and career goals in the video game industry. In reviewing essays, the Admissions Committee will be looking for evidence of applicants’ research, their understanding of the video game industry and their explanation of how they see themselves building a career in gaming.

Academic Requirements: Prospective Video Game Design & Development students must have an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or have successfully passed a Grade 11 math course. Applicants without this requirement may quality for acceptance provided they attend Math Camp. Secondary school courses in Grade 11 Visual Arts and Grade 11 Computers/Digital Media are also recommended but not required.
